One way caves form: limestone (a soft, calcium-based rock) interacts with acidic water over time. Because limestone is soft, it scratches and carves easily.

Rainwater is naturally mildly acidic because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air — safe for people, animals, and plants, but capable of chemically wearing away certain rock.

The activity models this process: sugar cubes stand in for limestone, and clay represents the surrounding rock and soil.
